Swiss FIFA president Jani Infantino admitted Thursday that "nobody" knows when football competitions can resume "as we were before".
"We all want to get back to playing football again tomorrow, but unfortunately this is not possible, and no one in the world knows now when we will be able to play we were in the past," Infantino said in a meeting with the Association of South America for the game (Conmebol) via video technology.
"For the first time, football is not the most important. Health has become the first place and this must continue until the disease is defeated," he said, calling for "respect for those who suffer and those who help."
Health measures and restrictions imposed around the world as a result of the spread of the "Covid-19" virus led to the suspension, postponement or cancellation of many sports tournaments, especially football competitions, to contain the epidemic.
"Our world and our sport will be different when we return to normal. We need to make sure that football will survive and can flourish again," added the FIFA president.
